A recent article in Monitor Psychology discusses the rising number of young children being medicated for psychological issues—primarily ADHD but also anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Startlingly, the number of children ages 2 to 5 taking psychoactive drugs for ADHD has doubled between the years of 2007 and 2012. The amount of very young children being prescribed antipsychotics and medication for anxiety and depression has also increased significantly. This is very concerning because many of these medications have not been tested with young children, often have serious side effects, and may affect the developing brain. Behavioral therapy is the most recommended treatment for the very young and the CDC is working to educate physicians to either refer to psychologists or take part in integrated care with psychologists. The article encourages parents who are concerned about their children to “seek a psychologist first, who can help them understand and apply parenting and behavioral strategies”.
