Remember that last YouTube video that made you double-over in laughter? That fit of laughter actually mimicked the neurological patterns associated with meditation. A lot has been researched and published on the physical and mental health benefits of meditation (e.g. reduced stress, improved sleep, decreased depression and anxiety, among others). A recent Los Angeles Times article cited research by Dr. Lee Berk presented at the 2014 Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology that demonstrated genuine displays of laughter (hence the title Tickle your funny bone) evidenced constant gamma brain waves across brain areas. Gamma brain waves are connected with alert and focused cognitive functioning. While benefits of meditation and mindfulness continue to be found, enjoying your favorite comedy or belly laughing with friends may increase your relaxation and allow you to vicariously experience the benefits of meditation!
